6. Between Crush Control and Lipstick Apology which was your favorite to write and why?
Well, they were different.  Writing Lipstick was like falling in love the first time…there’s such a high when you finish your first book and you see it all come to completion and you think, ‘I created this’.  But Crush Control was much easier.  I had the direction of my editor and for some reason the story blossomed easily.  I found myself laughing a lot while writing Crush Control.  And I had a ball doing all the research - hypnosis and voodoo and spiritual advisors - it was a riot.

7. Both of your books, Crush Control and Lipstick Apology have interesting plots to them. How did you think of the plots for your books?

Thank you.  My goal is to have a plot that moves quickly and in an interesting way. The ideas for both books each came in an isolated moment of inspiration.  Something my sister said sparked the idea for Lipstick Apology and the inspiration for Crush Control came in the middle of the night while I tried to rock my sleepless infant daughter back to sleep.  For more specific info, I detail each inspiration on my website www.jenniferjabaley.com

8. What are some of your favorite books?
Oh, that’s really really difficult to answer.  Some recent YA reads that I really enjoyed are Anna and The French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins, Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver, Honey Baby Sweetheart by Deb Caletti.  Some of my favorite women’s fiction authors are Emily Giffin, Sophie Kinsella, Laura Dave.  And one of my favorite books that doesn’t get a lot of recognition is The Center of Everything by Laura Moriarity. It’s an adult novel but it’s a coming of age story about a young girl.   9. For our aspiring writers, what is the easiest part of writing a book? The hardest?   I think the easiest part is when you get the initial idea and everything is exciting and promising.  The hardest part is making yourself sit down and finish and not jump onto the next exciting idea and start over.

10. What are you working on next? Any new releases in the future?
I’m working on my next project right now :)

1. When did you know you wanted to become a writer?

You know, it was never really a lightning bolt moment.  I wasn’t one of those kids who always knew they wanted to write.  I always loved to read, but the idea to write was more of an evolution for me.  I toyed around with the idea for a couple of years before I got the idea for my first book, Lipstick Apology. When that idea came to me that’s when I really put forth dedication and decided to write seriously - and with a goal of completing the story.

2. Do you listen to music while you write? If so, are there any songs that inspired or relate to this series?

No, I find music to be a distraction.

3. Which character in Crush Control do you relate to the most (if any) and why?
I relate to Willow’s struggle to want to control things in life that you can not control.  I wouldn’t go to the extremes that she does to try and control her life :) but I understand the motivation.

4. What is your favorite part about being an author?

Hearing from readers.  Absolutely.

5. You were awarded ‘Georgia Author of the Year’ for your other book, Lipstick Apology. What was your reaction when they first told you this?

I was on vacation at the beach with my family and my mother when I received the news. After the initial shock, I was so thankful that my mother was there to celebrate with us.  My mom lives far away from us and I only get to see her about twice a year so it was such perfect timing that she was there in person to celebrate the wonderful accomplishment.

  1. I love audiobooks. I listen to books on my iPod while I work out.
  2. My favorite Starbucks drink is a venti hot chocolate.
  3. I get most of my creative inspiration either while I’m running or while I’m in the shower.  Maybe because it’s usually the only time I’m alone and not answering questions from my kids!
  4. I’m very much a sweet tooth.  I practically can’t walk through a mall without tracking down a Great American Cookie kiosk and buying a double doozie cookie.
  5. I dislike popcorn and cherries which most people find bizarre.
  6. I didn’t eat my first peanut butter and jelly sandwich until I was thirty. It’s not that my parents didn’t give me one, I just never liked the idea of it.
  7. I’m 5’3” and my husband is 6’3”. So I wear heels.  A lot.
